Cosplay in the Library

Cosplay in the Library

Remember when you were a little kid and you could wear your Halloween costume after Halloween and no one batted an eye? Well, cosplay is an opportunity to do just that!

Cosplay is short for “costume play,” which is when people like to dress up as their favorite characters in movies, anime, video games, books, etc.; and you can do it right here at the library!

You can come with or without a cosplay to our Teen Anime Club (ages 13-18), which meets every second Saturday of the month starting at 1pm. If you’re older than 18, you’re welcome to come to our Adult Anime Club every third Saturday of the month, starting at 2pm. These are perfect opportunities to test your cosplay out with fellow nerds and get prepared for our annual Cosplay Contest, an event where you can attend in cosplay and win prizes!

The next Cosplay Contest will be November 3, 2018. More information will be available later, but for now, you can get started on your cosplay by checking out some of our awesome books to get ideas on what you may want to create. We have books about costume design, sewing, and even a book on wig styling, which can be very helpful for getting that perfect character look.

Sometimes cosplay uses unusual techniques, which is why searching handicraft on our card catalog is helpful too. Handicraft is a term where you use everyday objects to turn them into something different! Did you know that you can paint googly eyes silver and they will look like rivets for cosplay armor? That is a handicraft!

Cosplay can also get super fancy and we have books to help with that too! A few books from Make: magazine talk about scifi and fantasy weapons and armor as well as wearable electronics.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a few materials, check out a few books, and get started on your cosplay! There’s plenty of time to finish it before November 3rd!
