Spend Your Leap Day Reading a Good Book!

Every four years, February gives us an extra day. What better way to use that extra day than by reading a good book? If you are planning on using your extra day to read, we have collected a list of titles that you could likely finish in a day. Here is a list of books from a variety of genres that were all published recently and are under 200 pages!

The New Me by Halle Butler tells a familiar story of a thirty-something trying to make it by on a temp job and finding that her lack of career may not be the true root of her unhappiness.

To Be Taught if Fortunate by Becky Chambers is a science fiction novella telling the hardships of a woman’s mission in space and the further hardship of reintegrating upon returning home.

In Riots I Have Known by Ryan Chapman, an unnamed Sri Lankan inmate gives his final confession as a riot unfolds in the prison outside his door.

In Miranda in Milan, Katherine Duckett imagines a fantastic sequel to Shakespeare’s The Tempest in which Miranda must navigate the vagaries of life among civilized people after her upbringing on an abandoned island.

Sing to It by Amy Hempel is a collection of short stories themed around the Arab proverb, “When danger approached, sing to it.”

State of the Union: A Marriage in Ten Parts by Nick Hornby follows the conversation of a couple who meet for drinks in a bar near their marriage counselor’s office to kill time before their regular appointments.

The Starlet and the Spy by Ji-Min Lee depicts Marilyn Monroe on her USO trip to Korea and a mysterious translator whom she meets there.

Ragged Alice by Gareth L. Powell tells the story of a detective in a small Welsh town who has the ability to actually see the evil in her suspects.

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell is reminiscent of classic Gothic horror stories, eliciting copious goosebumps as it follows a young, grieving soon-to-be mother being haunted by creeping wooden figures.

Monster Portraits by Sofia Samatar pairs imaginative pictures and text to create a magical bestiary.

An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten features a tricky 88 year old Swedish woman, accustomed to causing trouble from the safety of her recliner, becoming a murder suspect.

Happy reading!
