RPL Teens Write: Guest Author

RPL Teens Write: Guest Author

The Teen Scene at Rogers Public Library sponsors a teen writers groups: RPL Teens Write! The group meets the third Saturday of each month from 1-3 pm in the Glotzbecker Room. Teens ages 13-18 are welcome to join us for a nonacademic foray into the writing world. During the first hour, we explore various elements of creative writing through activities and discussion. While there are often parameters in place for the writing challenges during this portion of our meeting, none of them are academic or so proscribed as to curb individual expression. We’re most interested in nurturing each writer’s personal perspective and building their skills. The second hour is given over to individual and group writing ventures with writers sharing input with one another on their works-in-progress or future projects. Participants may also choose to work alone or to seek input from the facilitator during this portion of the meeting.

On occasion, we have special events, sometimes inviting adults to join in the fun as well. Last year we invited a panel of local worldbuilders to talk with us. Recently we had a Lemonade Party/Memoir Workshop during which, along with enjoying summertime refreshment, participants developed and began work on their individual memoirs.

Our meeting on August 17, 2019 at 1:00 PM, is all about the Teens. Local author Tamara Hart Heiner will be leading us along “The Writing Process: A Journey of Discovery.” Tamara has published 18 books including the Cassandra Jones series for middle grade readers and the YA Perilous series. Cassandra Jones grows up from age 10 through her early teens as the series progresses, experiencing all the feels from laughter and tears to fears and cheers. Her YA novels take on a darker tone, ranging from suspense (Perilous) to paranormal (Inevitable, Lay Me Down). Her own writing journey began with her first story at age 9, and during her senior year in high school she decided to pursue writing. Her strong memory, and loads of journals, from those turbulent teen years influenced both her writing and the way she connects with young writers. Well-versed in both the process of writing and of publishing, Heiner is also an experienced Writers Conference presenter and organizer. We are excited to welcome her to our group and invite RPL Teens and their friends to take advantage of this great opportunity. The group is open and everyone is welcome. This would be a great time to check us out!

Binge Watching Summer

Summer. Camp. Cookouts. Swimming holes. Lakes. Vacations far away, or not so far away.  That’s one way to do it.

Another is to binge watch new or new to the library DVDs or Blu-rays, whichever your preference.

First up are those of the slash, cut, burn, scream for your life variety. (Yes, some of these are laugh out loud funny because who doesn’t like a little ha-ha with their “oh no, not Billy!”)
