On June 28th of 1969, Manhattan police officers raided the Stonewall Inn – a known gay bar – under a search warrant for the illegal sale of alcohol. At the time, homosexuality was considered a criminal offense, and it was illegal to wear fewer than three items of "gender-appropriate" clothing. (New York Penal Code 240.35, Subsection 4). While police were detaining patrons inside the establishment, a protest erupted outside that lasted until the early hours of the morning. The initial crowd dispersed in the morning, but a fresh crowd gathered to protest after word got out. That protest did not end for over a week. In 1970, Lee Brewster and the Queens Liberation Front worked together to help overturn these New York Laws. The first Gay Pride March was held on June 28, 1970 and brought around 5,000 marchers to New York city, but today millions of people around the world celebrate pride month as an opportunity to celebrate diverse identities and lobby for equal rights. On May 31, 2011, President Obama released a proclamation that declared June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. In this proclamation, he acknowledged LGBT Pride Month as a chance to "rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity" (Presidential Proclamation–Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month).To help celebrate pride month we have put together a list of
