The Rogers Public Library will have a Hayao Miyazaki film festival which will start on Saturday March 18 at 2:00 and run through Thursday March 23.  The Library will show six of Miyazaki’s best feature length films.  Miyazaki is the most famous director and producer of feature length Anime.  His work spans forty years and he has won over seventy five awards including an Oscar for Spirited Away.  He is only the second Japanese director to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Miyazaki is often compared to Walt Disney or referred to as the Disney of Japan however such comparisons are misleading at best. Miyazaki’s films are rooted in traditional Japanese culture and have a much different pacing and narrative structure than American animation.  His films often have children or young adults as central characters star but they are not necessarily movies for children.  The best Miyazaki films have ambiguous complex plot structures.

American audiences, especially those raised on the explosive zaniness of Tex Avery and Chuck Jones Warner Bros. cartoons, or the lush high budget perfection of Walt Disney productions, may need some patience before submerging into the lush forests and misty mountains of Miyazaki’s imaginative world building. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig were the stars of Warner Bros. Cartoons but with Miyazaki films it is his magical mystical worlds and complex sophisticated plotting that drive the story and creates the mood.   His hand drawn cell animation is excellent and his rich realistic matting is superb.

Come join us at the Rogers Public Library for a Miyazaki film festival. Everyone is welcome.  Admission is free.
