New Christmas Movies at RPL

Dec 1, 2017

The goal of the Rogers Public Library’s movie collection is to provide movies of an enduring quality for the people of Rogers to enjoy.  These include award winning movies; critically acclaimed, innovative movies that changed the way movies are made; and just popular, crowd-pleasing films.  A good example of the last is It’s a Wonderful Life.  It was not a successful film when it was released either, financially or critically.  But in the 60s and 70s, the film was showed regularly on television around Christmas time until it became a favorite holiday film.  Now, it is regarded as one of the best films ever made, and routinely makes lists of the top films of all time.

The Library is always reviewing and analyzing the DVD/Blu-ray collection to make sure it is a well-rounded movie collection.  Each year the Library adds films to the collection which may be nearly forgotten or have only recently become available on DVD.  One such film is Laurel and Hardy’s March of the Wooden Soldiers (Also known as Babes in Toyland).  It’s largely forgotten today but for many families in the 1950’s and 60’s, this film was a staple of holiday television.  This movie was remade in 1961 by Walt Disney starring Annette Funicello and Tommy Sands and is the Babes in Toyland most people remember.

This year the Library purchased several lesser known Christmas movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood: The Great RupertRemember the Night, and It Happened on 5th Avenue.  The Great Rupert stars Jimmy Durante and an animated squirrel that saves Christmas.  Remember the Night has a stellar Hollywood pedigree, starring Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanyck with a screenplay by Preston Sturges.  It Happened on 5th Avenue is one of those forgotten gems that came from a minor studio, had a no-name cast, and was directed by a veteran but not well known director; yet everyone who sees it says it’s a perfect holiday movie, even better than It’s a Wonderful Life.

The Library is also building a Blu-ray collection of animated family classics, including the Rankin and Bass stop-action animation Christmas specials. These specials were specifically made for television and typically have a 30 minute or 60 minuet runtime.  Titles include Jack FrostSanta Claus is Comin’ to TownFrosty the Snowman and (the most famous of all the Rankin and Bass animated shorts); Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
